The comic requires readers to take certain elements for granted, such as the apparent bond between Rick Flag and June Moone or the fact that Katana is working as Flag's personal bodyguard, simply because that's how it was in the movie. It's understandable why DC would opt for a movie-inspired team, but this series is in danger of proving exactly why forcing symmetry between comics and movies is a bad idea. At a meager 13 pages, it's not as if the main story offers room for much more than the basics anyway. There's some amusing interplay as the Squad emmebrs struggle to deal with the side effects of being dropped from space, but that's about it. Unfortunately, the script is a little too preoccupied with again hammering home the purpose of the team and the uneasy alliance between Amanda Waller and Rick Flag to really dig into these characters' personalities or conflicts. While it comes as no surprise that Quinn and Deadshot would be prominently featured (Margot Robbie and Will Smith being easily the biggest name stars in the film) there will likely be many fans angling to play as other members in some form. With the previous Suicide Squad Rebirth one-shot re-introducing readers to Amanda Waller and Rick Flag, Suicide Squad #1 widens the focus to include the entire team - Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, Katana and Enchantress. In what will no doubt come as a disappointment to some fans looking to take control of their favorite Squad member, only Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Diablo are available as player characters - with no indication made as to whether or not other characters will be available at a later date. While some might have expected a brawler or team-management co-op experience to be the game genre favored by an ensemble feature like Suicide Squad, Special Ops takes the form of a first-person actioner with players taking up arms as members of the Squad versus the (as-yet unidentified) villains of the film. While utilizing the recognizable new character-designs of the iconic DC Comics villains seen in the film, the game employs a semi-cel-shaded art style reminiscent of No More Heroes and Street Fighter IV that also mirrors the film's grafitti-inspired posters.
